Samos,
one of Aegean's most green islands, is located near to Minor Asia
Coasts. Forests of pines and oil trees, picturesque settlements,
immense beaches, combined with the colour of tiles and sea, form
islands magical picture. Birthplace of Aristarhos and Pythagoras,
Samos, the island of godess Ira, has a history that begins in antiquity.
The
capital of the island, coastal Samos, is united with neighbouring
Vathy, built amphitheatrically on the green sides of the hills,
invites its visitors to walk its stone paths and explore its traditional
architecture. Admire the mansion houses that justify the greatness
of old times, watch at the small houses and the famous Lion Statue
of Pythagoras Square. Visit the Archaeological and the Byzantine-Ecclesiastical
Museum, the "Vouleftirion", the Palace of Justice, the
Killed Soldiers' Monument and Samos Garden. At the Town Hall is
the Art Gallery with portraits of fighters and souvereigns, as well
as the Constitution of Samos.
Ten
kilometers to west, is located the village Mytilinioi. On 1700,
after the devastating earthquake of Lesvos, its residents found
shelter at that beautiful land. There you will find Paleontology
Museum with findings of Pre-Historical Season. At the south is Pythagorion,
built over the ruins of ancient Samos. Small paths, graphic houses,
crowds of tourists and intense night life. In Pythagorion you will
find the Aqueduct of Efpalinos, a part of the Polykratis Works,
while very near are the ruins of Ira's Temple in Ereon. Ira was
believed to be born and grown up here. Excavations have shown there
traces of human life since 2,500 B.C. .
Karlovasi,
at the north, the second in size town of Samos, is a monument of
the industrial growth that the island had once. Imposing new-classical
buildings and countless tannages. At the top is the Church of Ayia
Triada, while in Karlovasi you will also see the building of the
University of Aegean.
Samos
has plenty small and beautiful settlements. Visit Ayios Constantinos,
Kokkari (beloved by the tourists) and Vourliotes. Manolates and
Ambelos offer amazing view to the Aegean Sea, while Marathokampos,
Pyrgos and Pandroso will calm you down with their totally green
landscapes.
Paleontology
Museum at Mytilinioi. There, you will see findings such as pre-historical
animals that lived before almost ten million years. They came to
the island from Asia, thousands of years, before Aegean Sea was
even formed.
The
"Ieron" of Samos, the Ionian adoration centre of goddess
Ira. The goddess was supposed to have been born and grown up here.
The
Castle of Lazarus, at Vourliotes, a relic of Medieval Era.
The

year are organised many cultural events during the "Manolis
Kalomoiris" Festival, while in August there is the feast of
Wine with abundant wine, local tidbits, live music and a lot of
dance.
To
Samos: Samos is connected with continental Greece coastwise and
by air as well. The trip from Piraeus port is almost 12 hours. The
duration of the air trip from Athens Airport is almost 50 minutes.

Gastronomy:
Yiorti is a really famous dish (meat boiled with fat wheat), while
you should also try the well known Wine of Samos (known since antiquity)
and especially the sweet wine Moshato. Don't forget to try fresh
lobster.
You should buy: Samos magnificent wines.
Fishing: Enough.
Sailing: Don't omit to visit the islet of Samiopoula.
Sport: Ascenting and walking at Kerki, the highest mountain of Samos.
Sea sports at Kokkari.
Swimming: Samos has plenty long beaches with spotless waters. Blue
waters you will find at Psilli Ammos, next to Vathy. Near, is the
Gangou beach, Roditses, Kirveli, Klima and Poseidonio. Impressive
is at the south the Potokaki Beach. Marathokampos has also beautiful
coasts. At the north, at Mikro and Megalo Seitani, you may see Seahunts,
while at Tsamadou you will for sure nudists. Other nice beaches
are Potami, Avlakia, Lemonakia and Votsalo.
Southern
than Samos is the islet Samiopoula. You may visit it with a boat
from Marathokampos Bight, as well as the neighbouring Fournoi islands.
