Rhodes
(Rodos in Greek), is the biggest island of the Dodecanese, larger
than the half of the whole prefecture. Its shape is like a dolphin
and its beauty attracts every visitor.
Greeks lived here since antiquity (first half of the second millennium
BC) and reached its acne during Mycenaean Era. During Dorian Era,
Ialysos, Lindos and Kamiros had grown a lot. The city of Rhodes
was built in 408 BC. During Hellenistic years the residents of the
island had the control of the whole Aegean Sea, while after the
years of Rome and Byzantium, Rhodes has a new season of growth,
occupied by the Gladiator Knights of Saint John battalion. Medieval
City of Rhodes, built during that time, today in almost excellent
condition, is one of the island's most appreciable monuments.
Occupation
of Rhodes by the Turks has as result the expulsion of the Greek
population from Palia Poli, the Old City. There, only Turks and
Jews had the privilege to live. The Greeks built their new residences
at the south and southeastern of the Castle. During twentieth century
Italian conquerors built Niohori, the north part of the city.
At
the city of Rhodes you'll find the small harbour Mandraki. At both
of its entrance's sides a statue of a deer stands (the one is mail
and the other female). On these deers did stand the eminent statue
of Colossus of Rhodes. At the breakwater of the harbour you can
also see the three windmills of Medieval Era.
The
Medieval City of Rhodes astonishes its visitors. Walls, castles,
galleries, fortresses and palaces offer a trip to the past. The
city is encompassed from a medieval wall with seven gates and is
separated in two parts: the northern, which includes the Knights'
Acropolis and the Palace of the Great Magicians (Castelo) and the
southern, where is Hora, the living place of the lower budgets.
Built
amphitheatrically round the harbour is the Ancient City. During
antiquity it was considered as one of the most beautiful cities.
Hippodamos, an architect from Milos, built it. The streets were
decorated with statues. Among them the most beautiful was that the
one of Pluto. Scattered in Rhodes are Ancient Temples with most
important those of Helios (Sun) and Hesis. The wall that encompasses
the city covered almost 700 acres.
In
southern Rhodes, near the settlement of Kataria, is Prasonisi. It
is a cape connected with the main island with a narrow band of land,
which gives the impression that is a separated island. The view
from there is unique. You should enjoy its sunset.
At
Paradisi, 25 km from the city of Rhodes, you will find a unique
natural park with dense vegetation and running waters, the famous
Petaloudes (Butterflies) of Rhodes. The park has a lot of labyrinths,
wooden bridges and lakes. Each year, from June up to September,
thousands of multicoloured butterflies come here for reproduction,
creating one of the most colourful and impressive spectacles of
nature. Some of the butterflies' species are infrequent and exist
in just a few parts of the whole world.
