Golden
beaches, blue sea, wild rocks, magnificent caves, catacombs of Early
Christian period and the classic cycladic architecture are the main
characteristics of this beautiful Aegean island.
The
capital of Milos is Plaka village. It is built in a hill situated
in the entry of the Big Gulf. Under Enetiko, its Castle, are unfolded
white houses, small churches and graphic roads. In Plaka you 'll
visit the Archeological Museum of Milos, as well as the Metropolis
Church and the Temple of Virgin Mary Korfiatissa. Don't hesitate
to go up to the Castle to enjoy the amazing sunset.
Precisely
under Plaka (in a distance of 2 kilometers) is the coastal village
Klima. It's houses are very small and white, built in the rocks,
almost above the sea, with multicolored doors which used to lead
in places for boats to be parked. In Klima you will visit the -
unique in Greece - Catacombs, which were used by the first Christians
at the period of persecutions. Really near to the village was discovered
in 1820, by chance from a farmer, the eminent Statue of Aphrodite
(Venus) of Milos, which is today exposed athe the Louvre Museum
in Paris.
The
harbour of the island is Adamantas, found in the interior of the
bay. The white houses of the village are surrounded by Almyres,
trees with intensely lila flowers. From Adamantas you can take a
boat to Kleftiko (the so called Meteora of Sea), Sykia (the blue
Cave), the Mines, the unreachable beaches, as well as the Kimolos
harbour. Adamantas is the centre of modern Milos, a road node fo
all the villages of the island.
At
the North-Eastern end of Milos, Apollonia (or Pollonia) is built.
It's a very beautiful, picturesque and quiet fishers' village.
The
Castle of Plaka, is built at the Hill of Prophet Elias, by the Venetian
sovereign of the island, on the 13th Century.
The
Holy Temple of Panayia (Virgin Mary) Korfiatissa in Plaka, has wonderful
Icons of Cretobyzantine Art and an Epitaph of 1600.
The
Archeological Museum in Plaka, where is exposed a copy of Milos
Aphrodite Statue.
The
Archeological Aera of Fylakopi, with elements of Early Cycladic
period.
Kleftiko,
athe south-western end of the island. A huge block of stone with
asymmetrical forms that emerge through the sea.
The
volcanic polygonal towers at Glaronissia.
Sykia,
the blue Cave, 3 miles northern than Kleftiko. In its interior is
created an incredible game of colours created by the sunlight.
Catacombs
at Klima. From the 1st Century A.D., this labyrinthian system of
corridors offered shelter to the first Christians until the 5th
Century, when a devastating earthquake closed its entry. These Catacombs
were also constituted place of burial for their deads.
The
Ancient Mines near the entry of Adamantas Gulf.
Near
Appolonia you'll find the Cavern of Papafrangas.
