Called
Nios by the locals, Ios for the rest of us, that picturesque cycladic
island is one of the Aegean's small diamonds. The white colour of
its houses ties up harmoniously with the light blue of the sky and
the deep blue of Aegean Sea.
Ios
is considered to be the meeting point of world's youth. It's a place
of unending joy and fun. Nevertheless it is able to provide calm
and peaceful vacations to anyone who seeks for that.
The
harbour of Ios, Ormos, is located at the western side of the island.
Among its white houses dominates the church of Ayia Erini, while
in a small distance is the Koumbara place, where you can enjoy the
marvelous sunset of Ios.
The
capital of the island is called Ios as well. It is unfold at the
one side of the hill, totally white with just some colour spoils
of light blue, those of its churches' belfries. As in all the Cycladic
islands, thus and here, you will find the ruins of a Medieval Castle
and many small Churches (Ayios Yeoryios, Jesus Christ and Ayios
Nicolaos). At the end of the Capital you can see the line of the
12 windmills.
At
the north of Ios you can find Plakoto and Psathopyrgos, a tower
of the Hellenistic period, as well as the place where the grave
of Homer is said to be. At Tsoukalaria Area is situated the "Odysseas
Elytis" open theatre. This side was one of the great Nobel
prized poet, most beloved ones
In
Yialos is the Holy Temple of Mother Mary Gremiotissa. The church
is located next to a Palm, with a magnificent view to Sikinos.
The
Monastery of Ayios Ioannis of Kalamos, at Pyrgos.
Psathopyrgos,
the Hellenistic period tower, at Plakoto Area.
The
ruins of the Medieval Castle at Ios village, which was built in
1397 by Marco Crispo.
The
Museum of Modern Art at Kolitsanoi.
The
ruins of an Ancient Temple in Psathi.
The
area where Homer is believed to be buried, at Plakoto. According
to tradition, the locals asked a conundrum to the poet which he
couldn't solve and thus he was compelled in death and burial there.
From
the beginning of May until the end of September, Cultural Events
"Homeria" are organized at the "Odysseas Elytis"
theatre. On 15 August, Mother Mary Gremiotissa's feast takes place,
while on 29 August Ayios Ioannis feast is celebrated at Psathi and
