When
Icarus, not following the advices of his father Daedalus, fell in
its waters, Ikaria (Nikaria for the locals) got its name.
In
that corner of Northeastern Aegean, the green hills that surround
the picturesque villages, embrace the deep blue waters and welcomes
each visitor.
Capital
of the island and main harbour is Ayios Kirikos, at the east side.
The town is built amphitheatrically, while among its traditional
houses one can distinguish new-classic buildings, such as the police
station and the port authority building. Visit Metropolis and Ayios
Andreas Churches, as well as the Temple of Ayios Dimitrios with
the trapdoor, existing under of it.
At
Therma you will see the -known since antiquity- hot radio sources
and the ruins of the ancient city of Drakanos.
At
the north is Evdilos, a green village with graphic houses and narrow
paths. You 'll be astonished by the sense of peace that surrounds
it. Evdilos is the second harbour of the island. On its hills you
will see the Nikaria Castle, which was built during the 10th Century
A.D., by the Byzantines.
Near
Evdilos is Kampos. There you'll visit the ruins of Ancient Oinoi
(pronounced Enoi) and Palatia (palaces), Byzantine mansion buildings.
At Armenistis, at west, you will be impressed by the gorge Halary,
the rich flora, the lake and the plenty waters.
At
Hristos stis Rahes you will be astonished by the residents' perception
of time
All the commercial shops and restaurants are closed
during the day and open at tahe evening to remain open until next
morning. Near Rahes you 'll find the beautiful Monastery Mounte.
At the south, admire the view from Ammoudia, visit the Theoktisti
Monastery which is built under two rocks and end to the coastal
Manganitis.

Church of Ayios Dimitrios and its "Katafiyi", a trapdoor
under the Holy Temple that is said to lead to a cave where the residents
of the island used to hide from the pirates.

On
17th July, the feast of Ayia Marina, Ikaria also celebrates its
freedom. It's the anniversary of the islands release from Turks.
On 6th August, at Hristos stis Rahes, is the celebration of Christ's
Metamorphosis, one of the island's greatest feasts. In Rahes there
is a great feast on 15th August as well for Mother Mary's day, where
you will eat local roasts. However, on 15th August the centre of
celebration is Yialiskari. At it's feast you will listen to traditional
music and watch to the famous Ikariotikos dance.
To
Ikaria: Ayios Kirikos abstains from Piraeus 143 naval miles. The
duration of the trip with a ferry boat is roughly 11 hours. There
is also air connection with Elephtherios Venizelos of Athens, while
that trip lasts almost 50 minutes.

Gastronomy:
Local honey, black wine and Kathoura (home made local cheese) are
the island's best gastrimargic suggestions. Don't forget to try
local roasts.
You should buy: Black wine, Kathoura, local honey and oil.
Fishing: Enough. Particularly at the near islands of Fournoi.
Sailing: Do not omit to visit Fournoi islands.
Sport: Walking and marine sports at the beaches.
Swimming: There are many and beautiful beaches in Ikaria. Seychelles,
a beach between huge rocks, is found a bit before Manganitis. Next
to Armenistis is the Nas beach with really thin sand. Nas is one
of Ikaria's most beautiful beaches. At the north is Yialiskari,
at the west is Livadi and Kampos and next to Halares river is Avlaki.
A lot of smaller beaches can offer you lonely and peaceful time
of sunbathing and relexation.
Next
to Ikaria are Fournoi, the nests of fish. In these small islets
you can enjoy swimming at Hrysospilia beach and eat fresh, inexpensive
fish at the small tavernas.
