The
Big Blue. If a phrase can describe best the marvelous beauty of
this island, it is not other than the title of the Luc Besson's
movie that was filmed here in the beginning of the 80's decade.
Strong
winds, white villages and the colour of the dry barren ground, give
to Amorgos the characteristics of a classic cycladic island. However,
what makes it to be distinguished is the deep blue colour of its
sea, a colour that gives to Amorgos astonishing, wild beauty.
The
harbour of the island, Katapola, is found at its western side. It's
a small settlement flooded with old white houses. The capital, called
Amorgos as well, is the centre of the island's life. Whitewashed
paths, graphic houses, Enetian Tower and Medieval Castle stir the
interest of each visitor.
Aiyiali,
at the north side of Amorgos, is the second harbour of the island.
This village with its simple architecture and its beautiful sandy
bay, is chosen mainly by younger generation. On the contrary, for
calmer holidays one should choose Kato Meria, Arkesini and Kalotaritissa.
The
small villages of Langada, Tholaria and Potamos are picturesque
and for sure deserve a visit, as well as the Temple of Ayia Anna
and of course the famous Monastery of Panayia (Virgin Mary) Hozoviotissa,
which is almost over the sea in a height of 300 meters.
The
Castle in the Capital, which was built in the 13th Century and the
Enetian Tower which is found next to the church of Ayios Yeoryios
Valsamitis.
The
Medieval Aqueduct in Kato Lakos.
The
"Hydromanteion" in the Temple of Ayios Yeoryios Valsamitis.
The
Byzantine Monastery of Panayia Hozoviotissa, the so called Monastery
of the Wall. It was built in 1017 and reconstructedin 1088 by emperor
Alexios Komninos.
The
Museum Area of Gavras Tower.
The
small church of Panayia Nikourianni, at Nikouria island.
The
two greatest feasts of Amorgos are those of Ayioi Anaryiroi and
of Christ's Metamorphosis. The first one takes place on 1 July at
Aiyiali and the second on 6 August at Amorgos village. At the feasts
you'll listen to traditional greek music and eat local "mezedes".
To
Amorgos: The island is connected by sea to Piraeus and Rafina, from
both Katapola and Aiyiali harbours. The distance is roughly 140
naval miles, while the duration of the trip with a ferry boat oscillates
between 7 and 9 hours. With a speedboat time is limited to 4 and
5 hours.
At Amorgos: Even though Aiyiali-Katapola road is good, the rest
road network of the island is not in the best possible condition.
The means of transport that you have in your disposal are municipal
buses, rented car or bike, small boats and
donkeys!

Nougat with honey in lemon leafs is the sweet of marriage and baptism,
while kserotigana are really delicious. Rakomelo (raki liquor cooked

island.
